Our latest remotes can guide you through the process of finding your Sleep Number setting. Begin by lying on the bed in your preferred sleeping position.

  • Press the Side button to choose your side of the bed.
  • Press the Menu button to show the main menu.
  • From the menu, choose Settings.
  • In Settings, choose Find Your Sleep Number.
  • Follow the instructions on your remote to find your Sleep Number setting. This will take a few minutes.

It’s okay if your Sleep Number setting isn’t the same setting you found in the store. Give your body a little time to adjust. Soon you’ll be enjoying all the benefits of a better night’s sleep.

Find your Sleep Number® setting

A Sleep Number bed is different than a traditional innerspring mattress, which is why it can take a little time to adjust. If you haven’t found that “just right” feel, we recommend adjusting your Sleep Number setting up or down by 5 to 10, and sleeping at that setting for 2 to 3 nights before adjusting again.

One of the great benefits of a Sleep Number bed is that you can change the firmness or softness whenever you’d like. Sore after working out? Long day on your feet? You can increase or decrease your Sleep Number setting for precisely the comfort you need.

If you are experiencing pain in your back, you may need to think about increasing or decreasing your Sleep Number setting to one that is firmer or softer. Typically, we recommend to lower your setting for upper back pain and to raise your setting for lower back pain. If the pain is in your neck or shoulders, it is likely related to your pillow.

When lying on your bed, your head and neck should maintain their alignment as if you were standing upright. If you have extra stress on the muscles in your neck, it can cause neck and shoulder pain. Try different pillows to find one that will allow you to maintain the most natural spinal alignment. We have a variety of pillows to fit your needs. You can adjust your FlexFit adjustable base to help take pressure off your pain points. Start by adjusting the head and foot position of your bed until you find the comfort level that is best for you. This can help alleviate pressure at the head, shoulders, hips and knees.

On FlexFit 2 and FlexFit 3 bases, the Zero Gravity setting can provide ultimate relaxation by allowing your body to float into a weightless position, alleviating pressure. From the Zero Gravity setting, you can make minor adjustments to the head and foot position to find your ideal comfort level. To save this setting, hold down the Star/Favorite button, or save over an existing default setting to make it your own.

Occasionally when two sleep partners have different body types and Sleep Number settings, it can cause one sleeper to be supported and cradled lower or higher in the bed than their sleep partner. If you are experiencing this with your Sleep Number bed, or if the sides of your bed are higher than the center of the bed, then please contact Customer Service so we can provide a solution.

The Sleep Number mattress is designed to contour to your body, so you may see an impression where you sleep. This is especially common at lower settings that cradle you as you sleep.


To minimize the impressions, we recommend filling your bed to 100 when it’s not in use.
