Strategies to help you focus on what’s making you happy.

Are you always working, going to social and family events, and taking care of everyone else but yourself?

Someday you'll take care of yourself.

But what if someday was now. Right now. It can be if you embrace the JOMO.

Instead of the Fear of Missing Out (FOMO), consider the Joy of Missing Out — JOMO. Let go of people, plans, beliefs, and behaviors that don't help your life so you can focus on what makes you happy.

“You don't need to quit your job, win the lottery or walk away from your responsibilities to make your life more of what you want it to be," Sam Horn writes in her upcoming book, "Someday is Not a Day in the Week: 10 Hacks to Make the Rest of Your Life the Best of Your Life."

Here are her strategies on how to make your life more of what you want it to be. Not someday, but today.

Evaluate Your Life

Play hooky for a day and see where that takes you, whether it's a bookstore or a nap (in your Sleep Number 360® smart bed). Write down what you don't want to be doing in your life and what you do want to do in your life.

If you can take one small step to do more of what you want to be doing, and stopping what you don't, “it can set up a ripple effect," Horn writes.

Don't wait for someday. Can you remember the last time you were truly happy? What does happiness mean to you? Put a date on the calendar to begin something that makes you happy.

“The more specific you get, the more likely it is to happen," Horn writes.

Abdicate Outdated Beliefs and Behaviors

Part of JOMO means letting go. Get rid of the people, the commitments, the stuff getting in your way. “Say goodbye to what's weighing you down and hello to what's lifting you up," Horn advises.

And initiate daily actions that move your life forward.

"Go with your gut and take the bolder of the options," Horn's dad once advised her. You get nudges from life if you leave space for them. Honor them.

Celebrate What's Right

There are things that are good — right here, right now. Take the first few minutes of your day to set the tone, through meditation, exercise, journaling — whatever makes you feel good.

“While there may be stressful situations in your life beyond your control, there are little things you can do on a daily basis to make life worth living," Horn advises.

And make sure you have a strong support network. “Only" doesn't have to be “lonely" if you associate with people who support your dreams and priorities.

Integrate Your Life

Instead of seeing your passion and profession as separate, you can integrate them.

For example, Horn's friend Kathy thought she couldn't play tennis anymore because of the failing economy. But Horn advised her to play at the expensive clubs where she could pick up clients.

"What I love about Kathy's story is it shows that playing tennis wasn't an indulgence that took time away from Kathy's business, it was a way to cultivate new clients," Horn says.

If you cannot integrate, maybe create a new career around what you love.

Negotiate and Innovate

You must ask for what you want, need, and deserve. Get a good night's sleep and then speak up, so your personal and professional relationships are more of what you want them to be.

“Stop trying to make people happy – you're not chocolate!" Horn jokes.

If that doesn't work, you can make a fresh start. Even if you're locked in and feel you have no options, find one thing — just one — that makes you happy and leads you to a better place.

If you've tried everything and your life is still not where you want it to be, consider moving out and moving on.

“Proust said, 'Sometimes the best way to develop new eyes is to seek new landscapes'," Horn says.
