To Make the Bed or Not?

To make the bed, or not to make the bed — that is the age old question. Which do you do?

Bed making wars are a common debate among couples. According to a You.gov survey on bed making:

  • About 37% percent of people always make the bed

  • 14% rarely make the bed

  • 7% never make the bed

Cali Hlavac and Lionel James of Destin, Florida, have been down this duvet hole before. She dutifully makes the bed daily. He doesn't.

“For me, a made bed helps the whole room feel cleaner and brighter, and I just feel happier when it's made," says Hlavac.

Since James doesn't care whether the bed is made or not, Hlavac thinks it's not really on his radar.

“It's not as important to him," she says. "He leaves before I do in the morning and he also doesn't mind getting back into a messy bed at night, whereas I will make the bed before I crawl into it if it's not already made."

Is Making the Bed Good for You?

Making your bed every morning is a "keystone habit," a term coined by Charles Duhigg in his book, "The Power of Habit," meaning it kickstarts other promising behaviors.

“Making your bed every morning is correlated with better productivity, a greater sense of well-being, and stronger skills at sticking with a budget," Duhigg writes.

Bed makers may feel like making the bed, often the first task of the day, gets them off to a good start.

In fact, happiness researcher, Gretchen Rubin, author of "The Happiness Project, Happier at Home" and "Better than Before" writes about the power of bed making in her happiness series, and found making the bed was the single top change people embarked on to increase happiness.

This could be why other online polls show bed makers may have more sex than non-bed makers, are more likely to exercise and eat healthy diets.

“I've always made the bed," says Hlavac. “For me, I hardly mess it up when I sleep so it's very easy to make. My boyfriend destroys the bed when he sleeps and doesn't care to make it. That leaves me to fix it/make it every single morning!"

“I need it to be in order when I leave the house."
