THE SCIENCE OF SLEEP

Sleep Number’s mission is to improve lives by individualizing sleep experiences. We have already improved more than 12 million lives, and in doing so, we are leading sleep science on behalf of our communities — embarking on one of the most comprehensive and meaningful sleep research studies ever.

SCIENTIFIC ADVISORY BOARD

Sleep Number has convened an interdisciplinary team of scientists, physicians, clinicians and researchers with expertise in sleep science and health to help provide evidence-based sleep and health expertise to our robust technology and design. The advisors and their expertise — along with the data of SleepIQ® technology — are essential in helping to solve the long-term sleep challenges that affect the health of millions of people. Specifically, these experts provide input on our innovation roadmap, longitudinal data, claims, studies and publications strategies to deliver on our mission to improve lives through proven quality sleep.

WHY IS SLEEP SO IMPORTANT?

Quality sleep plays a vital role in an individual’s overall health and wellness.

HOW HAVE WE LEARNED SO MUCH ABOUT SLEEP?

Our digital platform, SleepIQ® technology, uses high-resolution ballistocardiography readings to sense each sleeper’s movements and biometrics, providing full body measurement for effortless real-time interactions and personalized sleep insights.

HOW BIG IS OUR DATA?

SleepIQ® technology is one of the most comprehensive and accurate sleep databases in the world. The effortless nature of the model — nothing to turn on or wear — considerably increases the validity of our data as it accurately reflects real-life, at-home sleep patterns over time. Ninety-five percent of our sleepers keep their beds connected to SleepIQ® technology at all times, meaning we have access to significant longitudinal insights to advance the science of sleep.

WHAT IS THE SCIENCE BEHIND OUR SLEEP DATA?

To help people reach their maximum sleep potential, Sleep Number pioneered a new innovation called SleepIQ® technology, with life-changing results.

WHAT HAPPENS TO US WHILE WE SLEEP?

Our sleep quality is impacted by our behavior, environment and physical influences. Sleep Number is focused on designed sleep products and software designed to elevate the outcomes of sleep quality in order to help impact our physical and mental energy, help boost our immunity and improve our recovery.

HOW BIG IS THE PROBLEM?

Healthy sleep should consist of:

  • Quantity (7-9 hours for adults)
  • Quality (environment, routines, lifestyle choices) as defined by your restful and uninterrupted time asleep.
  • Timing (circadian stability) and consistent routines.

How Does Poor Sleep
Affect Us?

Sleep has a profound impact on our physical, emotional and mental well-being. It makes us more emotionally stable and resilient, and better equips us to handle challenges throughout the day. This has never been more true than today, as the global pandemic has forced society to face challenges of well-being like never before and quality sleep is a primary factor. In fact, our sleepers averaged between 6-17 more minutes of quality sleep during the spring 2020 pandemic than before. Averaging even 15 minutes more quality sleep per night is enough to boost immunity.

<7 HRS/NIGHT

Five consecutive nights of six hours of sleep creates a performance impairment equivalent to a BAC (blood alcohol content) of 0.07%, which corresponds to an almost legally drunk level (0.08%).

<7 HRS/NIGHT

Sleeping less than seven hours per night leads to a 32% increase in likelihood to catch a cold if exposed to the virus. Flu shots may be 50% less effective with inadequate sleep!

<7 HRS/NIGHT

Inadequate sleep strongly predicts weight gain: epidemiological studies show sleeping less than seven hours per night leads to 20-30% greater odds of being overweight, and 50-57% greater odds of becoming obese.

HOW CAN SLEEPIQ® TECHNOLOGY AFFECT MY SLEEP OVER TIME?

A SleepIQ® score is a measurement of your restful time asleep each night. It is a numeric grade between 0 and 100, where 100 indicates an ideal night of sleep.

HOW IS SLEEP NUMBER WORKING WITH MAYO CLINIC?

In January 2020, Sleep Number announced a groundbreaking agreement with Mayo Clinic.
