Ernest and Maria Anunciacion like to stay active. Ernest is on the road about forty percent of the time, for work, and when he’s back home, the couple likes to head out from their downtown Minneapolis home to explore the city and its restaurants and concerts. They play volleyball in the warmer months and go snowboarding in the winter, and also like to travel—Ernest has been to thirty-five countries in the last fifteen years, including Italy; Fiji, where the couple honeymooned; and the Philippines, where Ernest’s family is originally from.
When we caught up with Ernest recently, though, he and Maria were slowing down and shifted gears a bit, having welcomed their first child, Alister, just a week earlier. “Everything’s kind of different,” Ernest says with laugh. That includes their sleep schedules and habits. Ernest uses the SleepIQ® app, and his Sleep Score--well, it’s been better. “Last night was not good at all—I got a 12. I fell asleep on the couch,” Ernest says. “But the night before, I got an 84, which wasn’t bad.”
Ernest and Maria got their Sleep Number® bed about three years ago. “We wanted to make an investment in our health and our sleep,” Ernest says, adding that the app was especially enticing: “I can see what’s worked in the past, or what’s not working. It’s really useful to me to track those metrics. When I travel for work, I look forward to coming home and actually sleeping in my own bed. I just feel so much more energized in the morning.” And while no bed can compensate for the nighttime needs and whims of a newborn, the couple’s Sleep Number® bed has helped them make the most of their precious hours of sleep, and Maria has found the bed’s adjustability helpful during nursing.
Although Alister has, of course, changed their lives immeasurably, Ernest and Maria are excited to keep exploring and being active with their child. “We go to the farmer’s market every Saturday, and we get flowers, produce and coffee. It’s a nice ritual we’ve established,” Ernest says, “And we’re looking forward to doing that as a family, as well.”
If you could sleep anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Does it have to be on Earth? I think it’d be interesting to go sleep on the moon and look down at Earth, while getting a good night’s sleep.
